Designing With Web - Part 3: week 1

Rethink public transport experience for kids based on machine learning

Group 19

Project 1: SafeDrop

Context

when? where? who? why?

A lot of children don’t have the chance to walk or bike to their school and thus they need to take the bus. What seems a very simple task for an adult can be very stressful for a little human. Did he take the right bus? In the right direction? Did he get out at the right station? It can be very stressful for parents too, not to know what happens with their children and whether they safely got to school or home.

Target

for whom?

Our target is children travelling by bus to go to school and their parents. Indeed it is important, technologically speaking, for our project to have the ration one passenger=one seat (see Services Definition). The adults are the users of the app and the children are the users of the technology.

Service offered

what? how?

Our service would find its core in an app which would enable parents to make sure their child is on the right bus at the right time, and which would alert the children about their incoming get-off spot. To do that, each seat would be equipped with a sensor that can recognize and connect to the card of the child, in which the parents would put their child’s itinerary.

Project 2: Entertrain

Context

when? where? who? why?

It is of common knowledge that having kids around when we travel is not always the most pleasant experience, especially when we took place in a train which is not the cheapest travel option. Kids travel everyday, whether by themselves or with adults. We all thought one day that if these kids had something to do, they would probably leave us alone.

Since traveling First Class is not always possible, we are here to help. We have decided to develop a service that will accompany kids through their journey in the train. Focussing on train allows us both to be able to benefit to significant proportion of the population because the train in France is quite democratic, but also to be able to sell our product. The National Railway Company (SNCF) has the means to buy our solution while litte (or not) city public transportation companies are not necessarilly either willing or able to equip their buses and trams with our technology.

In a few words, our technology brings together machine learning and kids, for the best of both.

Target

for whom?

Entertrain was created to better suit the needs of traveling kids from 3 to 18. Whether they are traveling alone in the train, with their siblings, friends or parents, they could all be potentially interested by our service. At Intertrain, we actually know it will be the case! The long journeys in the high speed train, screaming for the youngest or being simply noticeably bored for the oldest are behind us. We want to empower kids and give them the place they deserve in the train. Kids, Entertrain is your friend!

Service offered

what? how?

Entertrain is a set of waterproof screens that would be displayed and kinked through an articulated arm in a big table in the train's "familly spaces." Each kid could then play by himself, but the screens could also come together and make a single big one. Kids can connect the screens and work together. They can also play on their own. Other option: network play with other children in the train or elsewhere. When no kids are around, the screens could simply be set aside thanks to the articulated and leave room for the adults around.

Entertrain in a set of educative games and exercices that adapts to the kids level, age and performances. You get better at the exercice, it gets tougher! Thank you machine learning! Whatever are your interests, you will find something entertaining but also educative for you. Your parents will be proud of their beloved kid! Depending on the age and level, Entertrain will propose to kids all sorts of games: spelling games, history games, mind games and quizzes. Of course, the good old paper and pencils will also be on the menu.
